The main problems affecting border security in Laos consist of three issues, namely the problem of border wars, and unclear border lines, the problem of smuggling people and goods. Border problems can trigger security stability disturbances at the regional and even global levels. For this reason, a comprehensive study of border security in the context of defense is needed. This research aims to identify factors that influence border dynamics, construct the concept of defense management, and formulate strategies to deal with defense threats on the Laos border. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research design. The research was conducted in Laos using interview, observation and document study techniques. This research found that the dynamics at the border are strongly influenced by political, social and economic factors. These dynamics have the potential to trigger defense threats, so they must be faced with defense management. Defense management at the border starts from the planning, institutionalization, implementation and control stages. The implementation of defense management is related to Laos' multilateral relations with neighboring countries. Strategies that have been successfully formulated include political strategies and management and infrastructure strategies. This research recommends that the Lao Government pay more active attention to the development of border dynamics by increasing the role of intelligence and empowering non-military actors. In addition, it encourages the Lao government to implement defense management in border management and develop a smart approach in carrying out strategies to maintain border security. For the Indonesian government, the research can be a reference for the management of defense management on land borders.
